The Canadian Health Food Association (CHFA) conducted a national study and found that about 60 per cent of Canadians said they are stressed at work. “This stress is unfortunately negatively affecting their health and other areas of their lives,” CHFA nutritionist Michelle Book said. According to holistic nutritionist Michelle Book, “there is a lot of research showing an association between a healthy diet, rich in fruits, vegetables and fish, and a reduced risk of depression. The exact reason for this is unknown, but the foods we eat clearly impact our internal chemistry. We are what we eat.” “When it comes to a foods-based approach, there is not a lot of research linking specific foods to increased rates of depression,” adds Book, of the Canadian Health Food Association at “However, having a diet filled with heavily processed foods and refined sugars isn’t going to do our health, or our mood, any favours.”

Why You May Want to Consider Eating an Avocado a Day, Yahoo! News, 11 February 2016
Here’s a big myth debunked: for one, eating avocados regularly won’t make you fat. Yes, they are high in fat, but it’s monounsaturated fat, which is the “good fat” that helps lower cholesterol – same goes for olive oil, which is a major element of the Mediterranean diet, which we’ve all heard is one of the healthiest diets in the world! “The monounsaturated fats in avocados are what give it the creamy texture that make it such a good replacement for butter, margarine or mayonnaise,” says Michelle W. Book., the in-house nutritionist at the Canadian Health Food Association. “These fats are also an important cholesterol-free way to help your body absorb fat-soluble vitamins like vitamin D, A, E and K.”

CHFA Names Top Natural Health Trends, Canadian Grocer, 12 January 2016
‘Tis the season for Canadians to set out New Year’s resolutions. And while juices cleanses and detoxes are prevalent at this time of year, there are other ways to kickstart healthy eating habits. The Canadian Health Food Association has identified what it believes to be the top five new natural health trends to look for our this year.

The Canadian Health Food Association (CHFA) is Canada’s largest trade association dedicated to the natural health and organic products industry.

Formed in 1964 from a grassroots community of health food pioneers, CHFA now represents over 1,000 member businesses across Canada, including manufacturers, retailers, wholesalers, distributors, and importers of natural health and organic products. These can include foods, vitamin and mineral supplements, herbal products, homeopathic products, sports nutrition products, health and beauty aids and more.


Trade Shows

CHFA produces three trade shows in Canada — CHFA East, CHFA West, and CHFA Québec — showcasing the latest trends and products in the natural health and organic products industry. CHFA East, hosted at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, is Canada’s largest conference and trade show dedicated to the natural health and organic products industry. With more than 800 exhibits, including the industry’s top manufacturers, distributors and brokers, CHFA East is the year’s biggest showcase of innovative new products and educational seminars.


CHFA West is the largest trade event and conference for the natural health and organic products industry in Western Canada, and the second largest in the country. More than 650 industry-leading exhibitors take over 65,000 square feet of the Vancouver Convention Centre for four days of educational seminars and product showcases. This event is the launching grounds for many new, innovative products and companies in Canada’s natural health and organic products industry each year, and give attendees a great opportunity to network, learn, and grow their business.

CHFA Québec

Tailored for the Quebec market, CHFA Québec is held biennially at the Palais des congrès de Montréal in the heart of Montreal. This event is host to 120 exhibitors representing the natural health and organic products industry, including manufacturers, distributors and brokers. CHFA Québec is a gateway to the natural health and organic products market in French Canada.

Helen Long
  Helen Long, President

With over 25 years of experience in not-for-profit, including 14 years with CHFA, Helen has led the Association as president and industry thought leader since 2010. In her role, Helen represents CHFA and the natural health and organic products industry by working with government decision-makers to create a regulatory environment in which all Canadians can benefit from safe, effective, and high quality natural health products.

David Clark
  David Clark, Vice President

David is a key leadership team member, and is responsible for managing key business files including finance and membership. He works closely with Helen and the Board of Directors in determining strategic direction and supporting the Board’s objectives. He brings his experience and entrepreneurial spirit to CHFA as we continue to support our members and promote the growth of the industry.

Adam Gibson

Adam Gibson, Director, Policy and Regulatory Affairs

Adam has over 17 years of experience working within the Canadian government and with a number of industries, political parties and international governments. Previously Director General of the Natural and Non-prescription Health Products Directorate, and Senior Executive Director of the Food Directorate in the Health Product and Food Branch, Adam is responsible for consulting with government, members, staff and industry stakeholders to represent our members in the regulatory development of the natural health, food and organic product industries, and overseeing CHFA's Regulatory Department.

Catherine O'Neill

Catherine O'Neill, Director, Membership

Catherine brings incredible passion for the industry and over 17 years of direct membership and marketing expertise to the team. She is responsible for the ongoing development and execution of CHFA’s membership strategy.

Judy Sharpe

Judy Sharpe, Director, Trade Shows and Conferences

With over 20 years of experience, Judy oversees the strategy, marketing and budget responsibilities for the Associations trade shows and conferences. Since joining CHFA in 2005, Judy has been instrumental in the growth and success of CHFA East, West and Québec.

Adam Gibson

Michelle W. Book, Director, Communications

As part of the senior leadership team, Michelle develops implements and leads communication initiatives that support the strategic priorities of the Association.  She is responsible for overseeing the integrated communications strategy including both internal and external communications, the management of all public relations, marketing, advertising and member communications.

Glenda Costa, Director, Finance and HR

An experienced accounting professional, Glenda oversees the Accounting Department and is responsible for managing and executing all aspects of CHFA’s day-to-day, month-end and year-end financial matters. Her area of focus also includes the coordinating of the Association’s payroll and employee benefit plan.
